We Shall Live in Peace One Day; Deep in My Heart; I Do Believe
Grade One/Two January 20-23, 2015
Happy Martin Luther King/Equality Week! This week we will talk much about this brave man who through his courage and sacrifices, made a positive difference in USA. We have miles to go, but we have traveled many effective miles in our journey to peace and equality.
This week in reading/language we will talk about siblings and our relationships with them. Our stories touch on this topic. We’ll begin by talking about birthday traditions and celebrations, our own, and those in other cultures and lands. Adjectives are the focus words this week, as we use them to describe many things, especially things we sense. Our sounds are oi and oy as in coin and boy, and the continuing effort to lock up final e.
Science will also focus on our senses, most specifically the foods we eat. We will tie in food and nutrition activities in this way. Social studies, as stated above, will focus on Martin Luther King, Jr.
We are happy that Mrs. Mary O’Flannigan is helping in math! This week we will continue our data unit, learning about and taking surveys, then interpreting that data. We will learn about range, median, and mode, as well. Seconds are practicing adding and subtracting 2 digits with and without trading while firsts are working hard to master adding 3 addends, a daunting task!
We continue our faith journey in religion as we explore the sacrament of reconciliation. Luke 16 contains wonderful stories of forgiveness; we will share those this week. As you know, next week is Catholic Schools Week, a really big deal for all the Catholic schools not only in Wyoming, but in the nation, as well. We will begin to prepare for that big event this week. If you are at all able, we encourage you to celebrate the 5:30 PM Mass on Sunday, Jan. 25 at St. Laurence Church as the children sing. They will also sing the following Sunday at St. Paul’s Newman Center at the 11:00 AM Mass. These are both great opportunities for us to share our wonderful families with the wider Catholic community and to thank both parishes for their ongoing and important support. Thanks in advance! J
