Happy Catholic Schools Week!

Grade One/Two January 23-27, 2015

Greetings this very special week as we celebrate our very special school! I am grateful every day for you and for your wonderful children. This is where I feel called to be and this is what I feel called to do. What a blessing!

Reading/language finds us reading stories about baking and bakers. Firsts will read Jake Baked the Cake, a really fun, repetitive rhyming story, while seconds read about Bruno the Baker. Our sound is a repeat of that necessary final e concept with long a, and the er suffix, as one who does something. Seconds also have the short e sound spelled ea as in bread.

In math, we will complete our data unit then zoom into geometry. This week we will focus on shape recognition along with the language of those shapes, such as edge, face, and vertex. The two main standards for grades one/two are mastery of addition and subtraction. A few of the cherubs think math is pretty stupid and irrelevant to life. If you can think of ways to help your child adjust his/ her thinking, it would be appreciated. I am trying here, but whatever you say may have a greater impact. Thanks!

We will catch up on a couple of Scholastic News issues then move into a social studies unit on continents, oceans, etc.

We continue to explore reconciliation in religion to prepare for our big day on Feb. 21. Second grade parents, if you were not at our parent gathering, please be very sure to read over the summary I sent home last week and prayerfully consider this sacrament. Discuss it with your child. Pray with your child as you celebrate God’s loving forgiveness! Your involvement with your child is more important than anything I can try to do here.

I hope that you can join us for some of our special events here this week, such as our opening Mass Sunday night, our closing Mass next Sunday at 11 AM at St. Paul’s Newman Center, Donuts with Dad and Muffins with Mom here in our gym, and our Talent Show on Friday. This is truly a week to celebrate and appreciate that we have a wonderful Catholic School in Laramie. Only 7 towns in Wyoming share this treasured way to educate our young people. Again, how blessed we are!
