Let’s ring in a New Year with learning and fun! There will be many exciting things happening in our room this week as we begin 2015.

In reading/language, we will read Jan Brett’s The Mitten. I have found many literacy activities to go with this book. We will also tie it to Story Champs, a nifty program you may have heard about from your child or from the Partners in Print night held in December here at school. We will think much about characters in the story and the actions they take, hence a review of verbs this week. We will do a short vowel review; you’ll see that in our spelling words.

Math finds us reviewing ordinal numbers as well as several computation strategies. We will begin to learn about data and collection thereof as we study tally charts and pictographs. Seconds are moving along in 2 digit addition and subtraction.

We will talk about Epiphany in religion as well as the 10 commandments and 7 sacraments. Seconds will begin the push to First Reconciliation. Please plan to join us for the important and necessary parent meeting about that sacrament next Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7 PM in the school gym. This is for second grade parents only who wish to have their child receive his/her First Reconciliation (confession) and First Communion this year.

In science we will begin to prepare for another virtual field trip next Tuesday. This time we will connect with the Greenville Zoo in Greenville, SC. My son and his family live near there and we visit the zoo each summer when we travel to SC to see Tim and family. I am anxious to share this experience with our students. There may be a charge for this event; it will be nominal and I will let you know soon.
